“I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability.”
– Ruth Bader Ginsburg
The original oil painting for this portrait was created alla prima on the evening of September 18, 2020, the night RBG died. I was cleaning up from dinner in the kitchen when my phone dinged and I read the headline and was stopped in my tracks. Of course the implications of what her passing means raced through my mind. Knowing that this very topic would be discussed if I were to turn on the news was incredibly depressing. So I did the only thing I could think to do, paint. And I did something I have definitely not done in a long while, paint a portrait.
You could say I was inspired. And I was. Her life and work are inspiring. The options and choices available to me as a woman were not available to American women of the previous generation but because of her tireless pursuit of equality are now largely taken for granted.
I’d like to be able to give back in some way.
